Thomas Gray (1716-1771), poet, was born in Cornwall on 26 December 1716. He attended Eton, before entering Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1734. He left the university without a degree in 1738, but after a tour on the continent, he returned to Peterhouse in 1742, and proceeded LL.B. in 1743.
